Sin What is it
First and for-most it is very important that all mankind becomes aware that it is an absolute fact from God that blood has to be shed for the remission of sins and is why God killed an animal and covered Adam and Eve with the skins after they disobeyed and the reason Cain’s sacrifice was rejected was because he did not obey this very command and presented a sacrifice of fruits and vegetables while his brother Able presented a righteous sacrifice of blood. Also during the Old Covenant period the blood of bulls and goats without blemish was offered and all others were rejected and then the last eternal blood sacrifice of the Lamb of God was sent by the Holy Father in heaven.
We as a society teach how to make money, cook, drive a car, use a computer, and many other such things that helps us grow and go in the right direction, but many personally place very little importance on overcoming many things termed in the holy bible as sin. Many have come to believe that the term sin has no real effect and are just some do's and don'ts set up by men over time to control the people. As a result of this thinking many of our younger people ask why should we be concerned in what some call sin? The question is, can sin such as the breaking of the Ten Commandments cause suffering? Did God give the Ten Commandments for our good, or was they given just for the purpose of control? The fact is that we need to learn about what sin is and take to heart that past studies have shown that wayward impulses have and will destroy any society. Although some are doing so, many more should pick up the pace in teaching the effects of sin. This should be the focal point in the public and private schools, and most importantly the family. This should absolutely be the focal point in all Christian Churches, but many Churches for the most part have become social clubs and places where children go to sing, play ball, and other such games. Some Churches have taught the harmful effects of sin, but many members leave at Church what was instructed and don't bother to go over the lesson later.
For years I would ask people what they learned after a sermon, and to my surprise most could not even tell me the title, or the main point of the sermon. This is one reason I prefer writing out the sermons and posting them here on The Master's Table web site. I believe that those who take the time to read will also take the time to study and grow from information they have gleaned from these studies. (See related links at the end of this study) We are living in a time that promotes sin and states that everyone should decide what is good for themselves and not let others dictate your desires. Many are teaching that homosexuality is just a lifestyle, and that gambling, prostitution, and even drug use is a choice for pleasure and is not a sin. They say that these things do not harm if used correctly and sin is just an old term for what someone has decided they don't want you to do because they don't like doing it. Did you know that God has a warning for our time? God inspired the prophet Isaiah to state..."Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! Woe to men mighty at drinking wine, woe to men valiant for mixing intoxicating drink, Who justify the wicked for a bribe, and take away justice from the righteous man!"
A look at Sin:
Just what is sin and is it just what someone has decided they don't want you to do? The bible tells us that it is the transgression of the law of God and we find that God's main laws (The Ten Commandments) have been established from the time of the creation. What many today are misunderstanding is that there is a very good reason God gave the Ten commandments to mankind. We will see facts in this study that the statements in the Christian/Hebrew bible about sin is in fact valid because of the effect of sin. We can also correctly state that; God in His great love for us has made it known what will harm, and even destroy us. Everything that God has stated as sin today will harm us in some way, or will lead to even greater more harmful actions.
There is a very wise saying that goes like this, “Sin is not hurtful because it is forbidden; it is forbidden because it is hurtful.” Sin is in reality the pursuit of the self and only the self. If everyone just pursues their own desires and not the good of others then hateful conflict will be the byproduct which produces ruin, sorrow and the end is destruction and death. The most important thing to understand about sin is if we just refrain from it because we are instructed to refrain is nothing more than conformance.
Although conformance is good because to conform brings about order and harmony, it's still lacking because the heart is not in it. The key is that we need to see sin the way God does and truly have abhorrence for it. We need to see the fantastic individual benefits of discipline and order. We need to come to the place where we understand how rewarding it is to archive a goal with discipline. Would you want someone working on your automobile that loves his work, or someone that complains and dislikes his job? There is another very good saying that states..."A true Christian will do what is right when no one is watching." I'm sure most parents would want their child to do what is right because it is right, not because the parent is watching.
Homosexuality may seem harmless because it has to do with sex in which everyone does, but I would like to ask how is it that a long term faithful loving marriage between a man and woman never produces long term sorrow, guilt, jealously, or even any sexually transmitted disease at all? The answer is that God Himself has put protection in the areas of His law. Yes our loving creator has given mankind the way to happiness, but many think they can find it elsewhere. The fact is that Satan wants us to not obey God because he wants to destroy God and all that He is doing. Satan is very cunning and will use our own reasoning to induce a change of opinion in what we really know is wrong. When a person first accepts a particular lifestyle of sin they experience many good feelings and even prosperity because Satan want's to get the hook in. This is true with sexuality, drugs, gambling, theft, smoking, drinking alcohol in excess, and yes this is even true with over eating. God knows that continued sin will make us its SLAVE! It in some cases will become an addiction, and then the addicted will spend thousands of dollars for their addiction, and in the end it will destroy not only the addicted, but many around them. The very key God wants us to understand is that these sins will never give us the satisfaction we seek.
At first it seems very good and fun but what many are not taught, nor understand, is that lust is just a mirage that lures us to what we would like it to be, however, as many know at the end of the day the addicted will go away empty and alone every time. The addicted goes away with guilt, and despair, which leaves them with the feeling of hopelessness. If many who are caught in the cycle of addiction would honestly take a closer look at their condition in sin one would notice that their life is full of confusion and is truly empty. The one addicted can’t function well at work or even give time to their mate or children. Things that should be important become minuscule, and the addiction becomes more important than anyone, or in most cases even life itself. In many cases the addicted has died young or lost many years of freedom. Even the addicted themselves will tell you how sin has made them truly miserable with great mental or emotional distress and extreme unhappiness. If they live through it after many years they will tell you how they missed the most important things of life.
The question is what does any act of sin really do for us, or society as a whole? If we looked at each one of the Ten Commandments in relation to the effects on society we would have a good picture of the harm the breaking of God’s law of love does to us all. Just to illustrate the point let's take a look at one commandment and see what the effects are, not only on the one committing the infraction, but on the family and society. Let’s look at the sin of adultery which in many cases results in divorce and let's notice all the other problems that could be solved by keeping this one commandment. The Census Bureau has released total state and regional marriage and divorce numbers (not the same thing as rates) for the year 2000. The total numbers of U.S. divorces (excluding the non-counting states) reported finalized annually are 957,200 in the year 2000. The total numbers of U.S. marriages (including those states) reported celebrated annually are 2,355,005 in 2000, 2,366,623 in 1999, and 2,267,854 in 1998. This shows that America has experienced a 50% divorce rate for thirty years. This means that 50% of today’s first marriages are predicted to end in divorce. Then as a result of this the rate of marital breakdown is likely to increase because children of divorce are themselves more likely to divorce. People who divorce also remarry and remarriages fail at a rate of (65%) than first marriages. The sad fact is that this year 2005, stepfamilies will be the predominant family form. What is the cause for such a high rate of divorce? It ranges from financial dissatisfaction to abuse, to neglect, to sexual dissatisfaction, but the core problem is
a lack of commitment because of considering only the self. One good quote I like is, “A successful marriage isn't finding the right person-it's being the right person.
A growing body of social science research shows that marriage is the best antidote to a host of societal ills and that divorce is more harmful to children than most people think. Which makes the number of American children affected by divorce more than 1 million a year, up from fewer than $500,000 in 1960 and all the more worrisome it is still growing. Heritage Foundation researchers Patrick Fagan and Robert Rector recently reviewed hundreds of articles and studies from leading social science journals to chart what they call "the downward spiral of family breakdown." Their report is a sobering read. Consider the link between crime rates and family structure. You can actually use the divorce rate in a given area to predict its level of crime, according to University of Chicago sociology professor Robert Sampson, who studied 171 cities in the U. S. with populations above 100,000 and found that the lower a city’s divorce rate, the lower its crime rate. Another study tracked 6,400 boys over 20 years and found those who grew up without fathers in the home were two to three times more likely to commit crimes. In Wisconsin (the only state to release government data on the link between divorce and crime), children of divorced parents are twelve times more likely to serve time in jail than are children from intact families with a father and mother.
Then there’s the connection between divorce and poverty. According to Mary Corcoran, a political science professor at the University of Michigan, household income for children living with two parents averaged $43,600. It dropped to $25,300 following a divorce. This is because in our society today it takes a two-income family to make ends meet. Studies also show divorce affects education. High school dropout rates are much higher among children of divorced parents than among children of solid married parents, and the children of divorce are 60 percent less likely to attend college than children from solid married parents. Girls from intact families are also far less likely to skip school. Also the effect of divorce on sexual behavior is noteworthy. United States and British studies show that daughters of divorced parents are more likely to engage in premarital sex. African-American girls are 42 percent less likely to have sex before age 18 if they live at home with their biological fathers. With one study of Hispanic-American girls finding this makes them 72 percent more likely to have sex before 18. Then we get into the monetary cost of divorce. The court must get involved with the divorce because of the property that must be divided between the man and woman. Then there is the question of joint legal custody of the minor children. This takes away from other issues the court could be addressing, and cost taxpayers Billions.
Another great cost on society for committing adultery is abortion and also shows we as a Nation have rejected God and we find through our research that even many of the Christian churches will not fight against abortion, or even teach young girls that abortion is murder. How many people claim to be Christian in this country? Millions? Perhaps a Billion? Abortion could not exist if all the Christian churches would DEMAND that it not be lawful. How many Christian woman have had an abortion? How many people that profess to be Christians work in the clinic that slaughter children? Do all abortion doctors claim they are not Christian? How many ministers look the other way because the good doctor gives generously to his church? Think of what could be accomplished if the thousands of churches across this country would get actively involved with teaching and keeping this one commandment! We as a Nation make laws against child abuse but encourage divorce. We as a Nation make laws against prostitution but at the same time look the other way in places like Vegas, and New Orleans. Yes as a Nation we have already rejected God and His word while continuing to claim His Name, but God has a way of waking people up and that is one purpose of the comming Great Tribulation!
As we can see by committing this one sin God calls adultery there are many problems that result in sorrow, and despair even for those that did not choose to comment the sin such as the children and grandparents. What if we could eradicate all sin? I realize that this paper is not going to stop the tide of sins on this earth, and as long as Satan is allowed to broadcast his spirit in the minds and hearts of mankind we will continue on in our filth because of this flesh that is against God, but we as Christians can, and should truly work on being the light God uses to remind others of the way things should be. Does this mean Christians don't sin? No! We sin as well and as the apostle stated in the letter I Jn 1:7-10, "But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins,
He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us."
Does this mean we can just do as we please because we are going to sin anyway? Absolutely not! The key is to confess our sins and then work on overcoming them because we have come to see the great harm our acts do to not only ourselves, but to others in a compounding way. The purpose of Christ's shed blood is to give us room to grow because God knows that we are weak and that we need help with this flesh. The point of coming to Jesus in the first place is to overcome our sins and find ways with God's help to do better and become a better person which in most cases involves going away from ourselves and considering how our actions will affect not only those we love, but all mankind. If you are involved in some addiction, always remember these words, Addiction is a bottomless pit and the only way to escape is to quit trying to fill it.
To help us move forward we should study the bible and learn of the good news of the coming Kingdom of God, because we have the promise of God Himself that the coming of Jesus will bring His Kingdom and put all sin and the governments of this world under control and bind Satan into outer darkness for a thousand years. Yes; Jesus will at His coming destroy those that rejects His shed blood and have become evil and cast Satan with his demons out for a thousand years, and as a result, all mankind will live in a world much like the garden in the beginning where peace and harmony will be the norm. Governments today are trying to legislate morality but what lawmakers do not understand is that man does not have the answer. The flesh is the cause of sin and it has been judged and condemned by God as we find scripture stating that flesh and blood cannot enter into the Kingdom of God and that this condemned flesh MUST be changed to spirit. It states; "Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed--in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory." "O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?" The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord." I Cor. 15:50-58
Even though I know we will never reach perfection until Jesus comes and establishes His rule on this Earth the answers to all our woes are truly very simple and have been given to us by our loving creator. He gave us His word in the bible as our guide, but because of the weakness of the flesh man rejects God’s instruction and argues over the many miner points. We don’t need to argue over the points of doctrine. We don’t need to ponder for days, or read thousands of pages in psychology books. We don’t need to interview dozens of so called experts. All we need to do is read and obey as much as possible without any arguments the simple instructions God gave us thousands of years ago, which is the law of love found in the Ten Commandments as we covered above!
Our Laws should be this simple:
Jesus stated this when a man asked..."Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" "Jesus said to him," 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' "This is the first and great commandment, and the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." Matt 22:36-40 36.
This statement from Jesus our Lord sums up the law of God. The first four of the Ten Commandments denote our commitment and love for God and the fifth commandment is our respect and love for our parents. The last five denote our love and respect towards our neighbors which encompasses all men, women and children on earth. Also see our links at the end of the list of the Ten Commandments for more on this subject.
What Are the Ten Commandments?
The Ten Commandments can be found in Exodus 20 and Numbers 5. From Exodus 20, they are:
1) I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.
2) You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
3) You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
4) Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
5) Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
6) You shall not murder.
7) You shall not commit adultery.
8)You shall not steal.
9) You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
10) You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.
Satan knows he can't stop the blood sacrifice of the Messiah from giving salvation to those that will accept it so he has done the next best thing and that is to bring into the Christian religion a false Christ and false gods for the people to worship.
